How Do Wish Trips Transform Lives?

For many families, a wish trip is a much-needed escape from the reality of battling a critical illness. In some cases, traveling to a far-off destination provides wish kids with a sense of detachment from a difficult place they’ve been in.

“These wishes are more than just a vacation – it’s about the family, removing them from the worry of medical stress, financial stress,” said Caitlin Sgarlat Deluca, DO, MSc, Pediatric Rheumatology, Update Golisano Children’s Hospital, SUNY Upstate Medical University. “Make-A-Wish® takes those burdens away, so they can experience something magical and help them heal.”

If you enjoy traveling, you can understand the intrigue and excitement that comes with an approaching vacation. Traveling pushes us to explore new lands and grow a sense of connectivity with other cultures. Many wish kids dream of traveling, whether to experience unusual foods or go snorkeling, learn the world’s history, or relax on the shores of a crystal blue sea. Heartbreakingly, some of these children only fantasize of a vacation from a hospital bed or doctor’s office, hoping someone will help them experience life beyond illness and pull them far away from painful procedures.

Seventy-five percent of wish experiences involve travel. Some kids wish to be mermaids, so they must travel from Land to Sea. Others wish to go to movie premiers on the opposite side of the country from their home. Some wish to see snow, go skiing, visit theme parks and more.

That’s why your airline miles or points can make all the difference for a child battling a critical illness. Wish travel has the ability to transform the lives of all involved in making these experiences possible. Nationally, Make-A-Wish would need more than 2.8 billion miles, or 50,000 round-trip tickets, to cover every travel wish each year. Donate your unused miles or points NOW to help transform lives with a trip!

During the month of August, we celebrate some of our most generous national travel sponsors that make wish trips more memorable than the average family vacation. And here on the Wish Nation blog, we’ll be featuring wish highlights of Land, Air and Sea – trips near and far that truly transform wish kids and their families.

“I cherish the pictures I get back from my patients after their wish trips. I absolutely adore hearing those stories of what it meant to them. It keeps me going. It keeps me waking up every day to want to do this job,” said Anup Patel, MD, Pediatric Neurologist, Nationwide Children’s Hospital and member of the Make-A-Wish Medical Advisory Committee.
